Discrimination against women in our society is a result from tradition, as well as social stereotypes and prejudices on the position of women in society. Unequal power relations between man and women are a result of discrimination against women, which limits the full progress of women.
The Romani population in the Republic of North Macedonia is still the most vulnerable minority in the country, they are the community who face discrimination from institutions, social prejudices and have a harder time obtaing srvices.
Roma women have a specific position in society and are victims to everyday intersectional discrimination because they’re women and because they’re Romani. A big chunk of Roma women dont have the oppurtunitу to make their own desicion in questions related to marriage, education, carrier, emplyment and other questions. These questions are generally made by the the familly or their husband.
Underage marriages and pregnancies are very likely to happen because of the previously mentoined topic which is a big factor in making the Roma community have the lowest procent in education and the highest procent in unemplyment and poverty. In these cases the Roma woman is totally dependent on her husband.
Аll of these factors contrinute to the incresment of domestic and geneder based violance geared towards the Roma women who most of the time stay quiet.
Reasons as to why women stay quiet about the abuse that they face are diffrent, the most common one is fear implemented by the abuser and shame, also a big factor is not having enough informations and not being aware that the abuse is happening. The discrimination made by institutions targeted towards Roma women is also a big factor in not reporting violance and the reason for that is mistrust directed towards the system and the institutions.
Because of these alredy known facts, Association Initiative for the rights of women from Suto Orizari conducted a research for the approach and function of the system made for protecting Roma women and victims of domestic and gender based violance.
